Murder Rate Reduced in 2020; 102 Murders Recorded

Chester Williams

While 2020 closed with the murder of Shane Flowers, it still ended on a high note for the Belize Police Department.  The murder rate is significantly down; in fact the number of major crimes reduced significantly across the board.  There were one hundred and two murders in 2020, which is thirty-two less when compared to 2019.  ComPol Chester Williams today said that officers have been effectively pursuing criminals and it has paid off.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Thanks to the men and women of the Belize Police Department as well as the wider public that welcomed us into their homes during 2020 and those who participated with the police to ensure that we had one of our best years ever in almost a decade when it comes to fighting crime across the country. And yes, while we saw significant reduction in major crimes across the country when compared to 2019 our figures were not where we want it to be, but it’s still is one that is worth celebrating. I think fro 2019, we had a total of one hundred and thirty-four murders recorded countrywide and in 2020, we have one hundred and two which is a reduction of thirty-two and so that is a significant reduction for us.”
