Sherman Mendoza Fined for Weed

Sherman Mendoza

A man who claims he suffers from herniated discs and is claustrophobic was fined five thousand dollars when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser today and pleaded guilty to Possession of a Controlled Drug with Intent to Supply Another.  Sherman Mendoza was nabbed with just over two pounds of marijuana on a Morales Bus by Police at a checkpoint on Saturday near Sand Hill Village.  The mechanic/body works repairman from Corozal told the court that his health condition, coupled with current economic hardships and the need to provide for his three daughters, as the only breadwinner, led him to fall for an offer for which he now regrets.   Mendoza begged the court for leniency, pointing to his otherwise spotless police record. It is a plea that the Chief Magistrate considered and, after informing him that for such an offense, the law prescribes a custodial sentence of up to three years imprisonment, plus a fine of up to ten thousand dollars, she was going to apply a proviso in that section of the law and just fined him five thousand dollars to be paid may March thirty-first, 2021.  If Mendoza fails to pay, he will be incarcerated for one year.  Police say Mendoza had the weed stashed in saran wrap and then in a red and black school bag that he was trying to hide on the bus.
