P.S.U. Meets with Public Service Minister Henry Charles Usher

The Public Service Union met with Minister Henry Charles Usher and Chief Executive Officer Doctor Osmond Martinez on Thursday to discuss recommendations made by the P.S.U. to investigate the recent fire sale in which government assets were disposed at rock-bottom prices.  This succeeds a Cabinet decision to launch a probe into the cheap sale that preceded the November eleventh general elections.  News Five spoke with Vice President Dean Flowers of the Public Service Union.

“The meeting was convened as a result of Cabinet’s decision which was to extend an invitation to the Public Service Union based on their agreement that an investigation is to be launched into the selling off of government assets at fire sale prices.  The ministry met with the Minister of Public Service, Honorable Usher and his C.E.O., Dr. Martinez.  Well first of all, they wanted our acceptance to be part of the technical team or subcommittee that would investigate the sale of government assets.  Also, having gotten past that discussion whereby Cabinet agreed that what was done was improper, irresponsible on the part of certain public officers and where possible the investigation is expected to hold individuals responsible and as well considering that the Attorney General’s ministry will form part of the subcommittee or investigative team to see if there is any act that can be criminally persecuted that that is done.  But for us at the union, it is that our primary motive is to ensure that we send a strong message to public officers that the union is not here to defend wrong, the union is not here to defend reckless behavior, only responsible behavior and where we can call it out we will call it out and whereby we can help to expose these ills, we will do so.”
