Central American, Freed of Drug Charges, Tests Positive for COVID-19

The six Central American men who were freed of drug-related charges on Wednesday and who were scheduled to leave Belize today are still in the country after one of their test results for COVID-19 turned out positive.  Five of the men were taken before the Magistrate’s Court again today to face immigration offences, and Magistrate Stephanie Gillett ruled that they be allowed to leave Belize, but that will not be before their COVID-19 test results are back and show that they are free of the virus and fit to travel.  The one who tested positive is being kept in isolation at the Belize Central Prison and will remain there until another test is done in the next week and determines whether he is COVID-19-free.  The remaining five are also being held in quarantine until their test results are in.  The Immigration Department had charged the men with being “prohibited immigrants” and Magistrate Gillett granted a removal order for the men to be sent to their respective countries as soon as the necessary health requirements are met.
