U.B. Allows Students with Arrears to Sit Final Exam

The University of Belize has decided to allow students who are indebted to sit their final exams. A release from the national university says “Students of U.B. who did not meet their financial obligations by yesterday’s deadline please note that you will allowed to write the December exams.” It is certainly good news for students who have been financially stressed and unable to pay their bill at the university. The university’s decision comes after the Ministry of Education wrote to President Professor Emeritus Clement Sankat, asking that students with arrears sit the final exams. Minister of State in the Ministry of Education Doctor Louis Zabaneh explains why the request was made.

“We had been receiving for sometime students calling us and mentioning that this was as possibility for them, expressing their distress at the likelihood of not being able to do their final exam after an already stressful long semester with a new modality. So that is what prompted our request the prison to the University for this action that was taken.”

“And the ministry received an official response from U.B.?”

“Yes, they responded back to us in the affirmation that they would be going ahead. Of course, they have concerns of the financial impact of such an action and we fully understand their position but in case like this we feel very strongly that we must be very concern and take action for those who are most vulnerable. We know that these students and their parents are suffering grave stress, financial as well, in particular due to COVID loss of jobs and etcetera. We had to ask the university to sympathize and take this course of action.”
