Blue Creek Community Gets Support from Spanish Lookout

The Mennonite community is one of several religious groups that has been lobbying with government for the full reopening of churches under the existing Quarantine Act.  In the wake of an incident that occurred in Blue Creek on Sunday afternoon, their brothers in faith from Spanish Lookout have issued a release pertaining to the opening of schools and churches in that community.  In a written statement, Erwin Thiessen, Director of the Board of Trustees of Spanish Lookout, was sure to point out the inconsistencies in allowing certain establishments to reopen while government continues to keep a lid on the number of congregants that can attend a church service.  Likewise, Pastor John Krahn of the Blue Creek community also pointed to what he describes as contraventions to the law.

“We believe that the Quarantine Act contravenes the constitution where it allows certain entities, certain companies, certain gatherings to exceed the numbers that the churches are allowed and we think that under the constitution that we should be able to receive the same protection.  And although this is not about the rights, like we said, yesterday was about supporting our brothers in the other church and this is about serving God and that is first and foremost.  But at the same time, like I said before, we are full-blooded Belizeans and we are protected under the constitution and we would like our government to consider that when there’s a Quarantine Act, if that contravenes the constitution then we change that so that it’s equal and fair to us enjoying the rights under it.”
