P.U.P. to Fight Application for Injunction to Delay General Elections

While the P.U.P. will not participate in the B.C.C.I. debate, it will be heading to court on Wednesday to fight an effort to stop the November eleventh General Elections. This is in respect of an application for an injunction to delay the elections until redistricting of thirty-one constituencies can be carried out. The P.U.P. says it will be asking the Court to uphold the argument that the Constitution of Belize sets out clearly a timeline for elections to be held noting that voting is a sacred right and Belizeans should not be denied the right to safely cast their votes on November eleventh. The P.U.P. also says it will carry out a redistricting exercise as a priority upon forming the new government. Holding one just days before an election is scheduled, makes no practical or legal sense. It further states that aside from the late filing, entertaining such an application would contravene the Constitution of Belize. We’ll be following this development from the courts on Wednesday.
