P.U.P. Orange Walk Standard Bearers Say G.O.B.’s Decision Unconstitutional

Kevin Bernard

While in Orange Walk on Wednesday, we polled three of the four candidates on the government’s decision to prohibit COVID-19 patients to vote on November eleventh. The Orange Walk district has the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 and the most active cases. Speaking out against the decision was Jose Mai, Ramon Cervantes, and Kevin Bernard.  All three agree that G.O.B.’s decision is unconstitutional.

Kevin Bernard, P.U.P. Standard Bearer, OW East

“Personally I think that the Prime Minister has spoken out of tune. The Prime Minister while he is the Prime Minister until the new Prime Minister is elected cannot simply take the law in his own hand because the representation of the People’s Act does not specify this, does not deny any voter who is on that voters list the right to vote and so I think it was wrong of him instead of finding away to get these people to vote.”

“I think that is wrong. I think that is wrong judgment call. I am not a legal person but I will tell you that I believe that is unconstitutional because the Representation of the People Act tells you that the person who cannot vote is one who is insane andCOVID-19 does not affect your sanity. It affects your health.  And there are people who are COVID-19 positive and have no symptoms. Are you going to deprive this person of his voting? I believe that it is unconstitutional. It is wrong.”

Ramon Cervantes

“I think he was, well I know he was wrong in saying that. That is discrimination and it is violation of the people’s fundamental rights. I think he was wrong in it. I believe he owes the nation an apology, at least an apology he owes the nation because it is very wrong. It can happen to any of us. And all of us know what happens, the stigmatization that may have contribution that we don’t want to happen in this country.”
