6 Players and 4 Coaching Staff of Verdes FC Test Positive for COVID-19

Six players and four members of the coaching staff of the Verdes Football Club have tested positive for COVID-19. The team is currently in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic where tonight they were to participate in a match against the Arcahaie FC from Haiti as part of the CONCACAF Scotiabank 2020 League. But upon arriving to the island, the team was swabbed and four players and four members of the coaching staff tested positive so they have been isolated and will be quarantined for fourteen days.  The two other players who tested positive were swabbed while travelling through Panama and are now quarantined at the Panamanian Health Authority in that Central American country. Late this evening, News Five spoke with Sergio Chuc who says that the team had been in practice for three weeks in Cancun and are likely to be returning home.

“Because they were unable to train here in Belize because of the pandemic situation and the quarantine situation, Verdes decided to go to Cancun from the beginning of the month. So they have been in Cancun for the last three weeks training, getting ready for this game that should have taken place tonight at six in Santo Domingo against Arcahaie Football Club from Haiti. They are playing in Santo Domingo because it is the Haitian’s home game, but they did not have a qualified field so they moved their game to Santo Domingo. However, upon arrival and the protocols that CONCACAF has in place, they needed to swab them and take a COVID-19 test. Unfortunately, eight of the delegation that landed in Santo Domingo tested positive for COVID-19; four players and four of the coaching staff. I must inform you also that en route to Santo Domingo on Saturday, two of the players that were travelling through Panama tested positive at the airport in Panama and they have been quarantined by the Panamanian Health Authority in Panama. They will be there for fourteen days. So in total it is ten members of the Verdes delegation that have tested positive for COVID-19.”

The latest information from Chuc is that the CONCACAF match has been cancelled and the delegation of Verdes FC will be finding their way back to Cancun momentarily while the eight members will remain quarantined in Santo Domingo until they test negative.
