Will Outside Voters Affect Outcome of General Elections?

Patrick Faber

Will an absence of outside voters, Belizeans living in the Diaspora, significantly affect the outcome of the general elections?  It’s a question that was put to Collet Area Representative Patrick Faber earlier today when he was asked to weigh in on his constituency and the expected turnout in that division.  According to the party leader, no efforts have been made on his part to have Belizeans return home for the purpose of voting in the elections.

Patrick Faber, Party Leader, U.D.P.

“The clamors were loud and very clear for us to try to simplify things insofar as it relates to the tourists and we also saw where the Belizeans who were coming home were treated in a much harsher way in terms of what was required of them when they return.  And there were many issues that people had with that situation and so it was just to try to ensure safely, in a safe manner that once our people come back they don‘t feel that they have been or that they are being punished and also at the same time trying to make sure that the tourists, once they come to Belize, know that they are coming and they must be safe and they must be responsible but that they will be allowed to enjoy their time in Belize as well, in a safe way.  In my own constituency, I will tell you that I have never really banked on voters coming from abroad.  I will certainly, at this time, while we might know the number of voters who are outside of Belize, there is certainly no attempt on the part of my campaign to bring those voters home to Belize in order that they participate.  I‘ve always relied on those voters who vote here in Belize and live here in Belize, but if voters come and they want to participate we‘ve never turned them away.”
