PM Commends the Security Forces for Response in Prison Break

Dean Barrow

Two B.D.F. soldiers were injured during exchange of gunfire between the escaped prisoners and the security forces earlier this week; prisoner Akeem Tillett was shot and killed. Two other inmates at the central prison were also shot during a lockdown of tango seven on Tuesday and Stephan Jenkins perished from an injury to the buttocks. Today, Prime Minister Dean Barrow applauded the security forces saying they have done exceptionally well.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“In trying to recapture these prisoners, the fact that the security forces were shot at and two members were injured – shot at by one of the prisoners with this M4 carbine which I understand to be a lethal weapon also underscores how very much these people are being asked to do and are doing without any complaining. When I hear some politicians talk about oh the police and the G.S.U. and the way they are treating citizens and that sort of thing, nobody can doubt that there are excesses from time to time, but on the whole every single Belizean should be proud in a general way of security forces. Speaking for myself, I certainly am. I commend the Commissioner of Police and all the members of the police force. I commend the General of the B.D.F. and all members of the B.D.F. and I am absolutely proud of the fact that while there was nothing they could do to prevent that since they were not in charge, the way they sprang into action, the success they have already had in terms of the numbers that they have recaptured, all these things convince me that I ought to repeat the position that every Belizean at this juncture feel exceedingly good about our security forces and the fantastic job of work they are doing.”
