What’s the Fate of the Unemployment Relief Program

Dean Barrow

The fate of the Unemployment Relief Programme which is a government initiative overseen by Doctor Carla Barnett hangs in the balance as the election date draws nearer.  At present, a little over fifty thousand persons who are jobless as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have been approved for financial assistance and are accessing funds on a bi-weekly basis.  According to PM Barrow, efforts are being made to commence a third phase before November eleventh with monies that are scheduled to arrive via CABEI.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“It’s something like fifty-odd thousand that we’re dealing with in phase two and we’re going to be able to pay out everybody and conclude phase two by the end of the first week in November.  Now we are still negotiating with CABEI for something like twenty million U.S. dollars to help with the unemployment relief.  That’s taking a little bit of time to come through.  I expect that it will come through before the elections and it may well be that we, I would certainly propose that we start phase three.  Clearly, we’ll not get very far and it will be for the incoming administration to continue it.  But with any luck at all, we will get that twenty million or so U.S. dollars from CABEI so that a phase three can start.  But phase two will be finished at the end of the, in other words, everybody who’s been approved will have been paid out by the end of the first week in November.”
