New Security Protocols to be Introduced at Belize Central Prison

Back to the prison break, the Belize Central Prison is implementing new security protocols in the days ahead, following Monday’s massive prison break that saw twenty-eight inmates fleeing the facility after holding several guards hostage.  The Kolbe Foundation which manages the prison on behalf of the Government of Belize is conducting a separate internal investigation into the escape to determine whether in fact there was collusion on the part of prison officers.  While he would not divulge details of those new measures, C.E.O. Virgilio Murillo told News Five today that all steps are being taken by his administration to ensure that an incident like this does not repeat itself in the future.

“One thing I can tell you is that we certainly have began plugging all holes so that something like this will never happen again.  Without going into details, I know we have started to fortify all areas that were breached in terms of policies and procedures, in terms of infrastructure, we’ve done some adjustments to all of those areas to make sure that we don’t have another situation like this ever happening again.  Now one of the things I want to tell you though is that this, even though the media has been pushing this as a mass escape, they missed out the part with respect to or have not emphasized the fact that the guards were held hostage for a period time at gunpoint, even though it’s their own weapon.  So I kind of want to look at it as a hostage taking turned escape situation that took place and I know for sure, I’ve always taught my guards and my personnel that walls and steel, razor wires and chain link fence will not keep prisoners in, only alert guards will do that.  So I don’t know how much more to emphasize that, but I have emphasized those things all the time and procedures have to be followed so that is why we’re launching our investigation parallel with that of the police and certainly the prison will see where the breaches took place and who is culpable and action will be taken definitely.”
