Drugs in Prison is Nothing New

In respect of the leaked video in which escapee Christopher Bradley confesses that inmates are often supplied with drugs and other contraband by prison officers, C.E.O. Murillo says it is not surprising. Murillo says that he would not rule out collusion as part of the problem in this incident and on the issue of drugs in prison, he says, is not unique to Hattieville.

Virgilio Murillo, C.E.O., Kolbe Foundation

“I know there’s a video that went viral and I think that sort of galvanizes the impression.  But the police are currently taking statements from all guards who may have seen something and may have heard something and based on that then we will see how they go with it.  But I wouldn’t rule out that maybe information about the security procedures and the timings of certain staff when they are working, et cetera, all of these things are possible.  There is no doubt about it.  I’ll tell you what, one of the things I know the public, and just about everybody when I say the public, don’t know is that in prisons lots of things happen.  Prisons all over the world, for argument’s sake, the little guy mentioned about drugs, this is not a problem that’s unique to the Belize Central Prison.  Every prison in the world has a struggle trying to keep drugs out of their facilities.”
