Virgilio Murillo

But C.E.O. Murillo is defending the procedures at the Belize Central Prison; he says the Kolbe Foundation operates on standards designed to respect and uphold human rights. Murillo says that the Nelson Mandela rules are followed.

Virgilio Murillo, C.E.O., Kolbe Foundation

“As it relates to human rights of inmates, I think the Kolbe Foundation remember our mission and our vision hinges on the respect of human rights. I am not too sure what the prison looked like prior to 2002. I have a video. I wouldn’t mind share with you some other time. But certainly we try to meet standards. We try to meet international standards even if it is not in law. We are guided very much by the Nelson Mandela rules and we try to apply all of those things. One of the things I need to mention here is that when prisoners come to prison they will literally want you to think that they are all innocent. We can’t over look that. So that is precisely what they do. They go and call the media. I have no difficulty in being scrutinized because at the end of the day each and every building has their pay phones that the prisoners maintain contact with their family members. Prior to COVID we had volunteers coming to the prison, almost fifty different ministries and I am thinking if there were an abuses taking place, whatever that is, I believe that the very same people who come here would go out and talk.”
