B.P.M. Files Application for Interim Injunction to Stop Elections

Robert Lopez

The Belize Peace Movement has filed an application for an interim injunction to stay the election date. The B.P.M. is asking that the Elections and Boundaries Commission be prevented from holding the general elections, until its case is ventilated in the courts. The B.P.M. is asking that the government carries out a redistricting exercise to address the current mal-apportioned divisions. B.P.M. Leader Robert Bobby Lopez says they will not stop until the constitution is followed.

Robert Lopez, Belize Peace Movement

“The constitution says that this is the way it should be in order to hold an election. So having confirmed, we all know that we live in a constitutional democracy. This case is a constitutional case.   Section ninety is a prerequisite to holding a constitutional elections and as such this must take place. That is our firm believe. We feel that the current administration has no excuse as to why they did not do it other than just preferring to fight us at court, us ordinary citizens asking you to uphold the constitution that you swore an oath of office to uphold yet you choose to fight us in court to bring us to where we are today. And so we are saying no. We are not backing down, although we have been asked to by supporters of both parties. No man, that is what we are saying the Belize constitution demands that we get it right.”
