22 Prisoners Remain on the Run; 5 Recaptured and 1 Dead

Tonight twenty-two prison escapees remain on the run. Five are in police custody and one is dead. The prisoners who have been recaptured are Mark Pelayo who was caught on the Boom Road; Christopher Bradley and George Bednrick who were recaptured on Tuesday on the Coastal Road; Guatemalan national Juan Valentin Garcia who was recaptured this morning in the Lord’s Bank area and Kevin Buller who was recaptured in Hattieville late this evening.  The escapee who was killed during a gunfire exchange on Tuesday is Akeem Tillett. We requested an interview from the Police to get an update on the developments since Tuesday’s press briefing but we weren’t granted one today. For now, what we can share with you is the press release issued by police on the death of twenty-six-year-old inmate Stephan Jenkins who was shot in the buttocks during an uprising at the prison on Tuesday. The police report says that just before midday police responded to a report at the prison where they found out that prison officers were attacked while carrying out routine checks inside the building. The report says, “as a result, forces were used to stop the disturbance with resulted in a male prisoner being shot.” The report names the other injured inmate as thirty-three-year-old Adan Meza; while two prison officers Donnie King and Omar Ramirez were injured. Jenkins reportedly died while undergoing treatment. This disturbance was preceeded by the breakout where twenty-two prisoners remain on the run. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams appealed to the public on Tuesday to report any sightings of the escapees:

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“We are hoping that with the assistance of the public and I want to take this opportunity to appeal to the general public if it is that you have any information in relation to the whereabouts of any of these escapees to please call 911 or 922 numbers. It will be of great to us. The quicker we can get these individuals off our streets the better it is going to be. I also want to appeal to family members of these escapees that if it is that you know where they are it is not too late for them to surrender. I don’t foresee them running from the long arms of the law for too long and if it is that we have to be continuously pursuing them upon being caught the fact that they are armed can cause things to go opposite direction and so if your loved one is among these escapees please it’s not too late to ask them to surrender themselves to the authorities and make life easier for them and for us.”
