Barry Tillett is Remanded for Robbery
Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser this morning remanded eighteen-year-old Barry Tillett to the Belize Central Prison on two counts of armed robbery after he pleaded not guilty to the charges. The incidents occurred on September twenty-third in the Mahogany Heights community off the George Price Highway. Police allege that Tillett and two others used a handgun to rob Wen Ling Lee Store of cell phones and other items with over six thousand dollars. In the second incident, for which Tillett is charged, he and the others charged with him allegedly held up Allison Nicholson and robbed her of her cell phone on the same day in the same community. Tillett’s attorney, Oscar Selgado, argued for bail on the grounds that police had not identified him as the one who bore the firearm. Selgado also argued that there has been no identification parade thus far that links Tillett to the crime. But the Chief Magistrate pointed out that those arguments are for the court to decide when the trial gets underway and that it is premature to take those factors into consideration. Chief Magistrate Fraser remanded Tillett to prison and adjourned the matter until December fourth.
