A M.O.U. is Signed for a State-of-the-Art Polyclinic in Placencia

Linette Canto

Placencia is gearing up to benefit from its first polyclinic. An agreement was signed by the Belize Tourism Board, the Ministry of Health and the Placencia Village Council. The state-of-the-art facility will cost one point six million dollars and include consultation and waiting rooms, reception and registration areas, asthma bay, triage rooms, laboratory and pharmacy. The Placencia Village Council will provide the land for the construction of the facility; the M.O.H. will provide the technical requirements, staff and management of the polyclinic; and the B.T.B. will develop the terms of reference for the tendering procedure and manage the disbursement of funds with guidance from M.O.H.  Public Relations and Communications Manager Linette Canto of the B.T.B. says that it will be financed via a tourism fund created by the government, Norwegian Cruise Lines, and the B.T.B.

Linette Canto, PR & Communications Manager, B.T.B.

“Placencia is one of Belize’s leading tourism destinations. In 2019, Placencia welcomed close to seventy thousand overnight visitors and close to three hundred and seventy-five thousand cruise passengers, which means that it is imperative that a facility be built there that can adequately provide for the needs of both residents and visitors. We all know that health is a prime concerns, especially with the COVID-19 crisis, so a clinic like this would help in developing Placencia as a healthy and safe and also visitor friendly destination. The project is being financed by the tourism development fund. That fund comes from an agreement between the Government of Belize, the Belize Tourism Board and Norwegian Cruise Lines where seventeen cents U.S. per visitor to Harvest Caye is allocated to this fund. And this is the first time that a project is being finances through this funding, but I am sure that there will be others in the pipeline.”
