Belizean Stranded in Peten, Guatemala

El Informativo Melchor is reporting that Belizean Kelton is stranded in Peten, Flores, Guatemala. Reporter Rudel Alvarez wrote that Kelton was first in Livingston staying with family there and has been trying to make his way back to Belize. But that is proving to be difficult since the land borders are closed so he is stranded in Peten and homeless. Alvarez says he would usually see Kelton near the traffic lights near the University of Peten and has adopted a dog named “Bless” to keep him company. When Alvarez spoke to Kelton, he said that he had not eaten in days and so the reported purchased food for him.  Alvarez told News Five that Kelton is of sound mind and while people generally treat him well, some have been hurling insults at him. Whenever he would approach people for food or money, he would be given a banana. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today told News Five that Belizean nationals who find themselves in distress outside of Belize are to contact the nearest Belizean Embassy or Consulate. The Ministry says that many Belizeans have received assistance through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic missions. The Ministry says that processes are now much more complicated; some borders remain closed, some countries are on lockdown, and others have a variety of new rules relating to entry and exit. The Belizean representatives abroad can help persons to better navigate that processes in the countries where they are present. Embassies and consulates, however, are not able to coordinate travel arrangements.
