One Suspect in Custody but no Charges in the Murder of Nelisha Nolberto

Nelisha Nolberto

The shocking murder of twenty-one-year old Nelisha Nolberto remains under investigation tonight. The mother of a baby boy was killed on Saturday night though it is believed she was not the intended target when two gunmen unleashed a volley of bullets at a group of persons at her sister’s house on Pelican Street. She was killed instantly but the purported wanted man managed to flee. Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano.

The Belize Police Department is working diligently to solve the murder of twenty-one-year-old Nelisha Nolberto.  The young mother was slain on Saturday night at her sister’s residence on Pelican Street Extension.  The callous taking of life, according to investigators, is possibly related to an incident in Placencia last Thursday in which George Murphy was also shot and killed.  A suspect remains in custody, however, Nolberto’s family is still trying to come to terms with her senseless murder.

“One of the most things that hurt me is that she was planning, she said she wanted to be an attorney so she said that January here she would have started a paralegal course at Wesley Junior College where she graduated from.”

That dream of someday becoming an attorney-at-law has been dashed and the community, particularly neighbors who reside in the immediate vicinity of the deadly attack, remains in shock.

“I was worrying about my brother but not realizing that there was a pretty lady across the street and it hurts me, and I empathize and sympathize with the family hundred [percent].”

While charges are yet to be brought against the suspected killer, Nelson Nolberto reminisces about his daughter and the fact that she has died leaving behind a six-month-old son.

“I would often be with my grandchild.  If he wasn’t sleeping he would have probably been right in my arms right here.  I take care of him every day along with her and she will greatly be missed by everyone.  Everybody loves her, a very quiet person.  If you don’t talk to her, she doesn’t talk to you.”

Incidentally, the deadly shooting took place at the home of Olga Nolberto, a Woman Police Constable, who is the elder sibling of Nelisha Nolberto.  Notwithstanding the fact that it involves the family of a colleague in law enforcement, all efforts are also being made to prevent any retaliation.

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“All efforts will be made to de-escalate the threat of violence and the threat of any violence, so our police personnel will be out there to ensure that we put a stop to it.”
