A Young Mother is Slain in Gang-related Shooting

Nelisha Nolberto

A young woman was shot and killed on Saturday night while visiting with her sister in Belize City. Twenty-one-year-old Nelisha Nolberto, a single mother of a six-month baby, was with family and friends when two gunmen entered the yard and opened fire.  When one of the gunmen could not discharge his gun, the wanted man managed to flee, but Nolberto was fatally shot.  Police believe the fatal shooting is gang-related.  Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano with a report.

For the Nolberto family, the anguish of losing a loved one to gun violence, their twenty-one-year-old daughter, is just too much.  The single mother was shot and killed in a spray of bullets on Saturday night whilst at her sister’s residence on Pelican Street Extension.  It was an attack, says her father, that was meant for someone else.  Nelson Nolberto had just ended a call with Nelisha when his grandson called him back frantically.

Nelson Nolberto, Father of Deceased

“He was telling me that gunman is in the yard shooting up and so I asked him, “Where are you?”  He said, “Well, we are in the house.”  And so he said, “But I noh hyah auntie none at all.”  He said, “I was trying to holler for auntie”, but he didn’t hear anything from auntie and then so I tell my wife.  My wife was asking me what’s that [and I said] they’re shooting at Olga’s home.”

By the time they scrambled to get to there, the mother and her two sons were met by a team of officers who had already responded to the scene.  The manner in which they were greeted by law enforcement leaves much to be desired from the men and women in uniform.

“Upon reaching there to see their loved one, they were attacked by the police.  My two sons were beaten up by the police.  My wife was punched in the face by a police officer as well.  That’s not the way to treat the loved ones that are grieving.  They should have had more respect and compassion towards them.”

“What do you believe, as a parent, what do you believe may have been the cause of all of this?  Was it that perhaps they went for somebody else?  Was it the fact that perhaps she was intentionally targeted?  What do you believe happened here?”

Nelson Nolberto

“I believe they went for someone else and I believe [that] because they cannot really catch that person they took it out of the girl.”

Nelisha Nolberto was in the yard with two other persons, including a young man who is the son of her sister’s common-law husband.  It is believed that he was the intended target of the deadly assault.

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“She was there along with other family members socializing when two male persons entered a gate and fired shots in their direction, causing the fatal injuries to Nolberto.  One person is in custody pending an investigation into this murder.”

The police department attributes Nolberto’s murder to ongoing feuds among Belize City gangs.

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“This is a result of ongoing gang rivalries in the city.”

According to Nelson Nolberto, when the attackers pounced on their target, one of the gunmen had trouble discharging his firearm and that’s what allowed the other persons to run for cover.  Nelisha wasn’t as fortunate.

Nelson Nolberto

“Apparently how the story came, if the gun was operating there would have been more deaths in this family. The guy that he was targeting ran outside of the yard and the gunman chased him but he didn’t catch him.  But he was the person that they were after.  My daughter is not the intended target and people are spreading rumors that it’s boyfriend/girlfriend and it’s nothing like that.”

Investigators working the case are trying to determine whether there is a connection between the murder of George Murphy in Placencia last Wednesday and the flare up of gang violence in Belize City over the weekend which may have resulted in Nolberto’s murder.

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“We are following up on that information that it may be related to that murder.”

Nelisha Nolberto leaves behind a six-month-old son. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
