Factors Contributing to Increasing COVID Numbers

Marvin Manzanero

When we last spoke with the Director of Health Services, he said that due to activities held in September as well as a family gatherings still taking place, the Ministry of Health was expected that the number of positive cases in the first week of October would spike. Today, DHS Manzanero spoke on the factors that are contributing to the increased number of cases stressing that adhere to social distancing rules and proper wearing of face masks.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“There’s multiple factors that may be contributing to that. Some of it would have to be social conditions; persons still having to go to work, you still have people that are not accessing health services for fear of being placed in quarantine, for fear of being told that they can’t work because they don’t have an assured earning if they don’t work. Fear and distrust in the system can also be drivers as to why people are reaching…if you notice, the numbers of people that are arriving very critically ill are primarily from the north—Orange Walk and Corozal—and those are significant contributing factors to why people are also dying. I am not saying that you would not have had the same outcome, but them you are not given the opportunity to give or get some level of treatment. So multiple factors; parties can be one. The fact that we are not doing physical distancing, the fact that there is not proper mask wearing, the fact that perhaps people are not leaving or are still leaving and socializing for non essential reasons. We just got reports earlier at a meeting that we had that there are still some levels of contraband that are going to be there, people still socializing and levels of that. So there are multiple factors that are wedged in that kind of response you are seeing in Orange Walk.”

So as of October fourth, there are two thousand one hundred and ninety-six confirmed cases; seven hundred and eighty-eight of which are active. One thousand three hundred and seventy-eight patients have recovered and there are fifty-eight persons under investigation. Two COVID-19 patients remain intubated in a critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
