Illegal Guats Captured in the North!

Joseph Myvett

Two Guatemalan who entered the country illegally are in police custody tonight after their vehicle flipped while attempting to escape from police on the San Antonio Road. Police say that around nine-forty-five on Saturday night, they saw a suspicious vehicle heading towards Santa Cruz Village – a border village that is connected to illegal crossings. Police signaled the vehicle to stop but the driver didn’t comply and the cops pursued them. The driver eventually lost control of the vehicle which caused it to flip several times before it came to a stop. Police say the driver jumped out and ran away from the scene but they caught the man and woman traveling in the vehicle. At this time police say they believe the driver is a Belizean and they are using the vehicle’s information to track him down.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Officers were on patrol on the San Antonio Road in the Orange Walk District when they observed a blue Isuzu Trooper heading in the direction of Santa Cruz Village and as a result officers put on revolving lights and trying to move ahead of the vehicle but instead the driver sped off towards Santa Cruz village and somewhere just before reaching the bridge, he lost control and the vehicle overturned several times. With officers in pursuit, the first person to be out of the vehicle was the driver who made good his escape into the nearby bushes. Officers rescued the other two persons on board the vehicle and their identities were learnt to be thirty-year-olds Alvaro Alfredo Lara and Vilma Bautista Choni and they didn’t have any documentation stamp in their documents to indicate that they legally entered Belize so they were taken into custody where they were swabbed and later placed in quarantine pending the outcome or the results of that swabbing before charges are preferred against them.”

“Is there any theory what they were doing – were they trying to get to Mexico?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yes, we believe that based on some information we were working on otherwise – that was their intention to go to Santa Cruz and then crossing the illegal crossing point. Yes, it was more a human smuggling movement.”
