Belize Has Measures in Place if Honduran Caravan Comes!

On Saturday, law enforcement officers were deployed to the Belize-Guatemala border in the west following reports of a caravan with thousands of Hondurans was making its way through Guatemala to head to the United States. The Belize Defense Force soldiers were deployed with riot gears to block the entry of the caravan in the event they tried to cross through the western border, which remains close at this time. The Hondurans entered Guatemala last week Thursday and media reports today say that Guatemala has sent almost three thousand five hundred of them back to their home country.  ACP Joseph Myvett spoke about the activities over the weekend; he says Belize’s security forces have other measures in place.

“Since that information has been received, law enforcement, especially from a policing stand point have increased our presence along the border and we have already put several other measures along the border which I do not want to speak about this time.”

“They are splintered now into smaller subgroups and one or more of those groups may be heading to Belize?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“I don’t know if they are heading to Belize based on the discussions with our counterparts. However, we have still put measures in place to deal with that if that happens.”

“If hundreds of people show up at the western border, all we have is a gate and some soldiers – three dozen or so?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“The issue is that we are aware of what happened in Guatemala so we are going to ensure that the necessary preparation is made in order to avoid something like that from happening in Belize. We have stepped up our efforts along the border so it won’t necessarily be only along the western border.”
