Persons Tested for COVID-19 and Dengue

According to Doctor Manzanero, the number of PCR tests available at the moment is not of concern since the inventory is ample.  The headache, he says, is that the lab will be overwhelmed with the processing of different tests. The DHS says that there are cases of co-infection where persons who have tested for COVID-19 have also tested for dengue.

On the Phone: Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“The number of tests? I think we are pretty solid with what we have in terms of PCR. We have been getting some further PCR tests. I think the last batch we got was eight thousand samples. What we have to be looking for is the other re-agents that come along with the PCR not only the re-agent for extraction but even other lab materials that are used for this. It terms of rapid tests those are procured for the airport. I now we know that a further ten thousand rapid tests arrived earlier this week. So I am not too concern about that. I think the concern is overwhelming the lab with other things. We are not only doing COVID-19 we are doing other items related that have to be routinely factored in., I think dengue is the situation. We have had a couple of weeks ago what you call co-infections two people have dengue and COVID-19 at the same time. That can be a complicated factor that can be monitored. I know that some other CARICOM countries have raised that process earlier today when we had that discussion.”
