September Ends with 49 New COVID-19 Cases

Over the past few days, the number of new COVID-19 infections has been higher than was previously trending. Two weeks prior, the number of cases had been on the decline and the Ministry of Health had reported that the numbers were plateauing, but since Monday, there has been a higher rate of infection in processed samples. The Director of Health Services on Wednesday told News Five that the spike was anticipated, given the recent Saint George’s Caye Day and Independence Day activities and family gatherings. So an additional forty-nine cases identified in a batch of one hundred and eighty-four tests came as no surprise. According to the breakdown, there are sixteen new cases in Orange Walk, twelve each in Belize District and Toledo; five in Corozal, three in Stann Creek and one in Cayo. Tragically, we can report that there is another death due to complications associated with COVID-19. The victim was in his eighties and died at the K.H.M.H. on Wednesday. Two patients remain intubated at the Intensive Care Unit of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. While twenty-one patients recovered, there are thirty-six point one percent or seven hundred and nineteen active cases.
