Farewell Special Envoy for Women and Children

Kim Simplis Barrow

Special Envoy for Women and Children, Kim Simplis Barrow, today announced the closure of her office. Simplis Barrow was appointed Special Envoy for Women and Children in 2008 and today she marked the end of twelve years of public service. She says that it has been a great honor and privilege to have been able to be the voice for the voiceless. Today Simplis Barrow recounted her accomplishments such as the construction of Belize’s only center for children with disabilities, The Inspiration Center, and the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Karl Heusner Memorial hospital.

“I wasn’t alone during this journey. I had so many partners and so many people rallying for me and many times when I felt like people were being unfair, that fuelled me even more. It gave me even more energy to get out and do what it is that I wanted to do. When you think about the inspiration centre and the neonatal and paediatric intensive care unit at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, those two infrastructure projects are there for all people. People from all walks of life can go there and get the access that they need. And I will say this because I think that it is important: my office has always remained above politics. Whatever we are doing we are doing for all women. Whatever we are doing we are doing for all children.  I will take some time to re-energize and refocus. I have worked with children before through Lifeline Foundation. We still have the Inspiration Center which is an N.G.O. so the work continues. I think because of the Equal Opportunities Bill and the misunderstanding around it I think we really want to focus on women, women equality and do more of women empowerment work and justice for women. I think that is key and hopefully I can lend m y voice to those issues.”
