BTV Heads to Sarstoon Island on Independence Weekend

A commemorative excursion to Sarstoon Island in honour of Hubert Pipersburgh and Nedal McLaren, both well-known members of the Belize Territorial Volunteers who passed away this year, was held over the weekend.  Founding member of the BTV, Wil Maheia, told News Five today that the trip to the southernmost point in the country went without incident until they attempted to encircle the island.  That’s when they came into contact with the Guatemalan Armed Forces.

“This our twelfth year going to the Sartsoon Island and especially it’s a moment where you know Hubert Pipersburgh was a big BTV, Belize Territorial Volunteer and also Nedal McLaren.  So we did that especially in their honour, Hubert Pipersburgh and Nedal McLaren.  They were two great soldiers and we just wanted to remember them as we went to the Sarstoon because we know if they were alive, more than likely they would have been with us.”

What was the experience like this time around?”

Wil Maheia

“Well this time around, you know, there is some protocol in place.  You gotta check in with the B.D.F. at the outpost center and we did that.  We went there and the B.D.F. were very welcoming and we informed them of our mission and they said okay, go ahead.  So we proceeded onto the Sarstoon Island, but before you know it we were encountered by the Guatemalan Armed Forces.”

The Belizean flag was placed briefly on the Island and the BTV returned to Punta Gorda.
