September’s Children Rally Held Virtually

Carol Babb

Like most events now, the annual Children’s Rally was held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The rally was held under this year’s September Celebrations theme “Overcoming Adversity, Creating Opportunity. Belizeans: Unite for Prosperity” The virtual event included speeches from Chief Education Officer Doctor Carol Babb in place of Education Minister Patrick Faber. Doctor Babb reminded students, teachers, and parents that while the pandemic has forced them to stay at home, it has in no way prevented them from waving their flags and celebrate Belize’s anniversary with patriotism.

Dr. Carol Babb, Chief Education Officer

“Belizean children it is our national school children rally, like most of you I am missing waving my flag and marching and singing patriotic songs, celebrating our country’s thirty-ninth independence. We cannot make the pandemic keep us from celebrating. We can celebrate in our homes. Get your flags and wave it in your homes. And you the students are having a difficult time adjusting to a classroom at home. I know you miss interacting and socializing with your teachers and friends. You miss the guidance of your teachers You miss being at school. Again we need to unite and form a community of support to make sure our students are meaningful engaged.  I know teachers miss your smile and hugs. So today send a virtual hug to your teachers. Send a virtual hug to your friends. Please know that the ministry of Education is supporting your teachers and your education.   I agree with Lance Gillett, a third form student of Belize High School who believes the themes overcoming, creating opportunities, Belizean unite for prosperity, is a very fitting and meaningful theme for 2020. He explains that this year has been a challenging year for all of us especially with climate changes, concerns arising, fire all over the world and increasing unemployment rates as a result of the ongoing pandemic. We truly have to unite for prosperity. If we do not unite during these times and not help one another we will not see any success or growth.”
