Will Net Vasquez Face Criminal Charges?

Dean Barrow

The Net Vasquez fiasco continues to reverberate since the start of the week and there is no telling of the length of time it will take for the inquiry to conclude—considering how far back an audit of Vasquez’s personal expenses goes—and it can run past the term of this government.  Whether there will be criminal charges brought against Vasquez should he be found guilty of financial abuse is anyone’s guess.  According to Prime Minister Barrow, while it appears on the surface to be a matter of credit card expenses, a thorough investigation will determine what happens next.  We note, however, that there are other allegations that have been made against the beleaguered ex-chairman aside from credit card misuse such as the transfer of company assets to his name.

“That person will be in charge of the overall superintendence of the investigation.  But of course, that person will have to retain the services of auditors so that in fact the investigation can proceed on a proper political footing.”

“PM, will there be any sort of criminal consequences if these allegations prove to be true?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I can’t answer that.  I don’t know enough about the situation.  From my understanding, in terms of the report I have received, I don’t think so but I don’t know.  I can’t even tell you when exactly the investigation will be concluded.  Perhaps by the time it is concluded I suppose it will last beyond my tenure.  If it doesn’t then we would have to look at the findings that the investigation would turn up if in fact the investigation outlasts me then the decision as to whether to turn over any findings to the police would be a matter for somebody else.”

Reporter

“But isn’t it just a matter of looking into credit card spending?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I can’t assume that that’s all it is.  I assume so but I don’t know, that’s why we must await the appointment of the new chair and the initiation of this investigation process.”
