No Word on Other Resignations for Embattled B.T.L. Ex-Chairman

Nestor Vasquez

In the wake of the allegations made against Nestor Vasquez on Monday, the longstanding chairman of the national telephone company demitted office on Tuesday as the Board when the Directors confirmed an investigation is to take place.  Unlike former B.T.L. board member Doug Singh, who was also Vasquez’s colleague on the S.S.B. Board of Directors, he has not announced his departure from other statutory bodies, including the Integrity Commission, the S.S.B. board and the Central Bank but that is expected in the days ahead. On Wednesday, PM Barrow informed that he is to meet with Vasquez to determine what happens where those seats are concerned.  In drawing a parallel between Singh and Vasquez’s abrupt resignations amid scandal, we asked the PM for his opinion on the matter.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“You can say that in a situation like that you’ve done nothing wrong but in order to deal with the issue of appearances and in order for the investigation to proceed in a manner that as chairman there can be no question of your trying to obstruct, that the best thing is to resign.”

Isani Cayetano

“This is the second highly placed person within the United Democratic Party that has fallen from grace, in a manner of speaking, within the past six months or so.  You had Doug Singh, for his own reasons, stepping down as the chair of the S.S.B. and now you have Mr. Vasquez for this particular [issue].”

“They are not related at all and are completely dissimilar.”

Isani Cayetano

“Understood.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Doug Singh resigned because he said some things that people found unpalatable but it had nothing to do with any allegation of any kind of irregularities.  This is far different.”

Isani Cayetano

“Understood, but these are persons whom you placed a lot of confidence in, in their ability to be able to lead and to be able to guide the processes forward, respectively.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Well, I don’t see that there is any problem, again, in that regard with Doug Singh.  I am leaving; we know that we have a leader elect who will take over immediately.  My tenure ends when the general elections are called.  Doug Singh is clearly still very much available to the leader elect to help with the campaigning and with the shaping of the party’s manifesto certainly for the next general elections.”
