P.U.P. Calls for Audit of Food Assistance Programme

Oscar Requeña

The People’s United Party is calling for a complete audit of the Food Assistance Programme and the Unemployment Relief Programme. Tens of millions of dollars have been spent on the programme and the P.U.P. is saying that there is hanky panky going on in both programs and that the audit would reveal the many irregularities.

Oscar Requeña, Area Rep., Toledo West

“Check Medina Bank, over sixty people listed that they are collecting food. They do not live there. We want to know where they live. Who is collecting that money on behalf of those people? Government is paying for the food, Sir. Check it out. This is the kind of thing that is happening and that is why, I will go further. This matter Madam Speaker I am certain that at some point some sort of auditing will have to be done so that we can have accountability and transparency in terms of government tax payer money is being used Madam Speaker.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The Food Assistance Program, I don’t care. They can jump high. They can fall low. They can swoon. They can tumble to the ground. There is no way that we were ever going to charter that program in a fashion that would see the politicians get involved. They keep saying that we ought to have worked with the village leaders. Those village leaders are chairpersons of their villages by way of elections that are nakedly, overtly political. So the moment you started to talk about putting the distribution into the hands of village council chairpersons, you are making the process political.  In terms of this crisis that we are facing you don’t play politics. That is basic good sense. It is not so much decency as good sense. Both the Unemployment relief Program and the Food Assistance Program are being even as we speak audited by the Auditor General of this country.”
