Cop Dies Nine Days after RTA
Ten days ago we reported on a road traffic accident in the north that left Police Corporal Anibal Mena critical in the hospital. Mena suffered massive head injuries when his motorcycle met in an accident with a pickup truck. Tonight we report that Mena passed away on Saturday while receiving treatment in the hospital. ACP Joseph Myvett tells us more about the accident that happened just before five p.m. on Thursday, September third.
ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch
“Police were called to the scene of a road traffic accident on the Pachakan-Chan Chen Road where upon their arrival they observed a gray Toyota Hilux with damage to the right portion of the pickup pan. Also seen in the area was a red Milon motorcycle with extensive damage. On the ground was a person with severe injuries later identified as Anibal Mena, Police Corporal, attached to the Crooked Tree Police Station at the time. Initial investigation reveal that Mr. Mena was travelling north to south while the driver of the pickup, Santiago Victorin, was traveling from south to north and upon reaching a street without name in the area, Mr. Victorin then turned left across onto the no-named street which caused Corporal Mena to collide into the pan of the truck. He thereby received severe injuries and as a result he was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital and later to the K.H.M.H. where he passed away over the weekend while undergoing treatment. The matter is under investigation by police. Mr. Victorin was taken into custody. His vehicle was inspected and he was issued with a notice of intended prosecution pending an outcome of the investigation at that time.”
