John Briceño Comments on COVID-19 Situation in Orange Walk District

John Briceño

Close to one thousand five hundred positive COVID-19 cases have been recorded. The Orange Walk District has the highest number with five hundred and eleven cases. Orange Walk is the hometown of Opposition Leader John Briceño and he was also asked if he believes that the Orange Walk District should be locked off from the rest of the country.  Briceño says that the government has to remove all infected persons and place them in a quarantine facility.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“The concern is a complete lock down, the financial pain that it creates not only on government but especially on families because they can’t go anywhere, they can’t work and earn an income. And to get any kind of help from government right now, it has been politicized. The food pantry is being controlled by Boots Martinez and the U.D.P. politicians all over this country. You tell them that you are going to vote for them or transfer in their division they put you in their food pantry. And I am very disappointed that Miss Judith Alpuche is allowing this to happen and it is happening all over the country. We can give names if they want. It is time for the government to consider in Orange Walk that the people that are sick, that have the virus that the government provides a quarantine area for them because what is happening? For instance the people that came from San Pedro that already have the virus, they went home and they infected their wife. We are almost to the fourth round of that virus here in Orange Walk in some families. I think that we need to remove them. One, I think we need to have plenty more contact tracers. We don’t have enough. Secondly, that the testing have to be more aggressive and we need to give the results more faster. That is why I have been advocating since I was in the NOC. Let us use the rapid test. The rapid test takes fifteen minutes. It is eighty five percent accurate. The PCR, they take five days, seven days to give you the results and it is only five percent accurate. As I mentioned to the Prime Minister if you get a negative just run it again just to make sure that it is not a false negative. Thirdly, we need to look at the facilities when someone has the virus, to go to the home and see if that person has self isolate. If they do not have the facilities to self isolate then the government should provide the facility to self isolate where they will not be infecting other people. That is the only way we are going to stop the spread of the virus short of a total and complete lockdown of the Orange Walk District.”
