Belize Records 19th COVID-19 Related Death

Preliminary data from the Ministry of Health shows that thirty-six new cases of COVID-19 cases were identified today with forty-four recovered cases. There is also another death to report, the nineteenth person to die from COVID-19. His name is Rolando Torres, a resident of San Ignacio Town; he died at the K.H.M.H.  on Thursday. He was at an isolation area at the Intensive Care Unit for some days before testing positive for COVID-19. According to Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Torres was considered a suspect case not only because one of his relatives was also positive but because he was showing signs of respiratory problems.

“He has a relative that has already been documented as a positive case and he was having respiratory symptoms. So that is why San Ignacio and Belmopan had classified him as a highly suspect case when he was sent on to Karl Huesner.”

“When he was transferred to Karl Huesner he was placed in the I.C.U.”

“My understanding is that he was initially placed in the containment unit which is the transition area if you will that Karl Huesner has until after you are determined whether you are positive or negative. This person initially, that would have been around the tenth of September, would have went through a gene expert text which is the first test that we do whenever we have a highly suspect case. When that is positive you are considered that you are positive. When it is negative we run it through a routine PCR test. So I did a PCR test on him last week and that was initially negative. I understand that he was moved to the ICU area which is not considered for COVID -19. So he was placed in an isolation unit inside the ICU simply because he was a highly suspect case. Another swabbed was done by the doctor and that is the one that turned out to be reactive for SARSCOV2.”
