Commissioner Williams Responds Sternly to Quarantined Belize City Family

A Belize City family remains quarantined at a facility in Cayo after holding a family gathering on Friday night in Belize City. Present at the gathering was Pashwan Stuart who was about to celebrate her sister’s twenty-eighth birthday when her brother arrived. Her brother is COVID-19 positive, and according to Stuart, he was told to leave. Before he did so, police arrived and took everyone present, including children to the Raccoon Street Police Station. Eleven adults were later transferred to the quarantine facility in San Ignacio where they remain until a negative test is obtained. Upon their release, they will be charged for illegal gathering and according to Commissioner Chester Williams, three persons who are COVID-19 positive were present at the gathering. While the family says that officers treated them unfairly, Commissioner Williams was outraged today saying that officers should have “flogged” them.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“It is just sad to see some Belizean people continue to blame everybody for the increase of COVID numbers in our country but those who are out there causing the spread fail to understand and realize they are the ones to be blamed. We had received information I think it was Friday night or Saturday night that there was some party in the Saint Martin’s area. Police went to the location where indeed there was a social gathering and about twenty persons were there including eight minors. Among those persons who were at this social fathering there were three persons who were COVID-19 positive at that gathering. I don’t understand reckless and irresponsible one can be, you know you are infected you are suppose to be in isolation but yet you are among people socializing and what makes the matter even worse is that some of the didn’t even have a mask so these are things continues to occur and people begin to ask and blame this and blame this one why the cases are going up but these are the same type of people who are causing us to be in the position that we are in currently. And I am sure that there are many more of these parties or social gatherings across the country. It just is that sometimes the police don’t know but I want to make an appeal to the public that whenever you see these gatherings please report it to the police and we are going to respond. If it is that we are to slow down the spread of the virus then each and every person must act responsibly and those persons know that they are infected should ensure that they remain in isolation. I think we should change the law that once you are infected you go out in public and infect you are charged with attempted murder. I think that is that is the way to go. I don’t want to care what the family has said, I don’t want to hear. They need to be more responsible.”
