Detecting Suicidal Ideations

According to psychotherapist Juliet Simmons, there are a number of factors that influence suicidal ideation or thoughts among men, including their present employment situation or financial constraints.

Juliet Simmons, Psychotherapist

“So these are definitely factors that would contribute to suicidal ideation: the unemployment rate, the financial stress that people are having.  So these are definitely things that we do pay attention to.  But I also want to mention that people talk or they may mention about their unbearable emotional pain as well because that is another high factor for suicide.”

Aimee Jex, President, Mental Health Association

“Sometimes because we have limitations and gender roles, nobody will talk about unbearable emotional pain.  So yes, it is there, it is present but how do people express it?  They will say, I don’t feel…”

Juliet Simmons

“It’s definitely something that is not easy to express.”

Aimee Jex

“I don’t feel like myself or things are just out of my control or I don’t think I could live this way, as you had previously said.  And so, they won’t necessarily talk about unbearable emotional… and so it’s very much about picking up on little things about the language.  Again, picking up on that sense of helplessness, picking up on that sense of worthlessness.  So if you know someone who’s always putting himself or herself down, if you know someone who consistently tells you, I really can’t do anything about this anymore… those are the things you really want to pick up on.”
