Hattieville Man gunned down inside his home

O’Neil Ferguson

The third murder for the weekend takes us to Hattieville, where O’Neil Ferguson was murdered inside his home in the Village. Ferguson’s family describes him as a giving and friendly person but there was someone who wanted him dead. Ferguson was shot several times on Friday night and his girlfriend was also injured during the shooting but she survived the deadly attack on their home. Reporter Andrea Polanco spoke with police and the family of the deceased to find out why the twenty-three-year-old father of one was killed. Here’s the story:

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

Twenty-three-year-old O’Neil Ferguson was shot and killed inside this house in the Windmill Area of Hattieville Village. Ferguson and his girlfriend, thirty-three-year-old Rhondine Gillett, were in the lower flat around ten-thirty on Friday night when the killer fired several shots at the couple:

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head, NCIB

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Information revealed that he was at his house along with his girlfriend Rhondine Gillett when they heard someone tampering with the window of the house and they made checks at which point several gunshots were heard. Rhondine Gillett received gunshot injuries to the arm and Ferguson was taken to the KHMH where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Ferguson was reportedly hit eight times – to the head and body. He died on the spot. His mom, Sherrie Sanchez, who wished to appear off camera, says that it’s a tragedy she is trying to process. She last saw her son alive on Tuesday of last week. She says that he ran with the wrong crowd – and perhaps that may have put a target on his back:

Voice of: Sherrie Sanchez, Mother of Deceased

“I know dah wah tragedy right now and I the try get strong and be strong for the rest of my kids so that they don’t do any craziness or so you know. I just want to put my lee bwai under the ground and forget about everything. I know I nuh wah forget about him.”

Andrea Polanco

“When is the last time you saw him and spoke with him?”

Andrea Polanco

“I imagine you never expected to get this tragic news?”

“Never. Never. Never.”

Andrea Polanco

“And mommy, he never shared with you if he felt like something was going to happen to him; that he had a target on his back?”

Voice of: Sherrie Sanchez

“No. ma’am. If he did I would tell you right now. He never said mommy nobody the watch ah or mess with ah. Because I know that he lived happy dah Hattieville.”

Andrea Polanco

“Maybe he keep the wrong crowd or anything of his past that could have made him a target?”

Voice of: Sherrie Sanchez

“Yes. I nuh wah say no because the crowd weh he used to hang out with right deh. Mussie mek all ah that happen.”

Andrea Polanco

“But you believe you know who did it?”

Voice of: Sherrie Sanchez

“Yes, we know. We know. But we wah just left it inna God’s hands and mek he ker it from deh. He does hang out inna the wrong crowd and talk fool inna the wrong crowd. Target fi ah.”

Police, however, say that there is no clear motive at this time. But they are investigating the angle of the ongoing gang rivalry in Hattieville Village. One person is in police custody in connection with Ferguson’s murder:

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“One person is detained for investigation into this matter.”

Andrea Polanco

“Sir, do we know why Ferguson was killed?”

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“We do not know at this time, no.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is there any connection to that ongoing rivalry in that community?”

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Yes. We are looking at that to determine if it is connected to the other shootings that have occurred in that area in the past.”
