Belize City Family Quarantined After B-day Get Together

Still on COVID 19; a Belize City family was detained on Friday and sent to quarantine in San Ignacio. Pashwan Stuart says that she along with a few family members were at home on Aloe Vera Street getting ready to celebrate her sister’s twenty-eighth birthday when her brother showed up. The problem here is that her brother is a COVID-19 positive patient. Stuart says that her brother was in front of the house no more than ten minutes when police officers arrived. From there all hell broke loose, and chaos erupted inside the house. All the adults and children were taken to the Raccoon Street Police and left outside under the rain. Eleven adults were detained at a holding cell and later transferred to a quarantine facility in Cayo. Stuart says the officers treated them unfairly and that the officers did not handle the situation appropriately.

“Friday it was my sister’s birthday. So we were just having a little get together. Nothing had started as yet. My brother who is COVID positive he showed up so he wasn’t there no less than ten minutes. We told him to go home, you belong home. When he was about to go the police pulled up because it seems that the neighbours called. So when he pulled up the police come. They met us inside and him outside. He never entered the house or made contact with any of us. They moved us with force out of the house because we were asking them if we are taking our kids and such. They said the children will go. So we got into the van. When we got in the van, we reached Raccoon Street Police Station. It started to rain. The kids were outside, in the rain. We are outside. My little nephew, three, he has epilepsy so he caught seizure. My sister told them that she needs to go home to get his medication so he can take his medication. They said that they are not taking her anywhere so she started to make noise. When she started to make noise and behave the way she behave then they decided to take her for the medication. When we looked, social worker popped up, saying that they are going to take the take the kids and we will be detained for illegal gathering.”

“It was ten people with ten kids. It was at our house at Aloe Vera. It was not a party. It was just a family get together for my sister twenty-eight birthday.”

“And then your brother who is COVID-19 positive showed up. Was he invited?”

On the Phone: Pashawn Stuart

“He was not invited. We told him that he knows that he does not belong out here, go home. We left  Friday. We didn’t bathe until Sunday and the only reason we bathe is because we told the officers that two females in here are on their monthly. They didn’t pay us any mind. The only reason we bathe yesterday was because an officer who didn’t suppose to tell us that they are taking us way to Cayo came to tell us that we need to send for clothes. They have not swabbed us or anything. They have us in a dirty environment. We were told this building that it has a COVID-19 patient and one of the BDF told us that they didn’t even sanitize it. The bathroom clogged up high with toilet paper. We as females use it so we have to at least clean the bathroom. It is not fully clean but one of the bathroom fully clog up.”

Up to late today, the family remains at the quarantine facility.
