Eat Healthy Foods to Fight COVID-19

Robyn Daly

A robust and diverse food supply is an essential part of the health and nutrition response to COVID-19.  As Belize continues to take measures to contain the spread of the disease, self-quarantine and the temporary closing of businesses may affect normal food-related practices.  Good nutrition is crucial for health, particularly in times when the immune system might need to fight back.  Today’s Ask the Experts discussed nutrition and what it means to vulnerable populations.

Robyn Daly, Nutritionist, Ministry of Health

“We have to highlight these groups of persons because, like it says, high risk.  They have special needs when it comes to nutrients.  So we’re looking at older persons, children, pregnant women and persons with health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.  These persons normally have specific nutrient requirements, so bodily changes and complications that put them at risk for health.  So good nutrition is very important for these groups.  We need to look at what are some points that we can do in times like these.  Basic tips to promote would be drinking more water and avoiding sugary drinks.  Avoiding salty and sugary foods, processed foods, fast-foods, aim for more natural foods.  We want to keep that concept in mind, natural is always best.  The less processing, the less cooking you do to food, the more nutrients you can get from it.”
