P.U.P.: Government Must Offer Urgent Assistance to the Banana Industry

The Banana Growers Association continues to carry out assessment of the damages caused by Hurricane Nana.  The damages are expected to be in the millions, but a specific amount will be known sometime next week. Hardest hit were banana farms in the Stann Creek District.  Today, the P.U.P. expressed solidarity with those who did suffer damages and notes with concern, the damage to banana plantations and losses to banana growers of up to forty percent of crops.  The P.U.P. points out that it will mean loss of critical foreign exchange and employment.  The P.U.P. says that as it awaits an official assessment, it calls on government to immediately provide whatever assistance is necessary to bolster the industry unlike the situation of farmers in the north, who are still awaiting assistance, since last year’s drought.  It also calls on NEMO to expedite help to who were affected.
