Introducing S.A.F.E. Busters

A number of business places have had to undertake sanitization when staff have tested positive to the corona virus. Other establishments have carried out the exercise to mitigate risks. This week, the Works Department of City Hall had to be disinfected because there was exposure to COVID-19. Hydrogen peroxide, a powerful and disinfectant, is the main product used to disinfect and prevent contamination.  Hipolito Novelo was at the Works Department and walks us through the process carried out by SAFE busters.  Here is that story.

These are the COVID S.A.F.E. busters. They are gearing up, putting on their P.P.E.’s and other protective gears to sanitize and fumigate the Belize City Council’s works department on the highway.

The first step is donning.

Three pairs of gloves are used for extra protection. They are sealed with duct tape. Protective foot wear is also applied to the pair. They have their face masks and are then ready.

“That is the key part of the sanitizing, is to protect them from the time that we reach there. That is why we have the donning. It is a whole process how they put on the ears and how they take off the gears. It is a strict guideline that they have to follow.”

These two S.A.F.E. busters work for Sanitization and Fumigation of Environment, S.A.F.E., a private company especially created in response to COVID-19. While the COVID-19 pandemic forced several businesses to close down, it gave S.A.F.E. the opportunity to prosper.

S.A.F.E. specializes in getting rid of the novel coronavirus lingering on surfaces. They kill the virus through the sanitization and fumigation of residences and business spaces of all sizes.  Owner Russell Gongora says the price is based on the square foot.

Russell Gongora

“An area, depending on the square footage. The main question out there is what is the price for square footage. Like every business is something that was new so I did my calculation to see how I can make affordable for everyone to do the sanitization of their premises. What we did is came up with a formula using square footage. In this case with square footage we charge ten cents with square foot. Depending on the location we have a fee that we charge for the travel cost.”

These S.A.F.E. busters are using SAFE Biosanitizer, a solution with its main ingredient being hydrogen peroxide. The solution is poured in the mechanical mist sprayer. The mist sprayer is tested and the SAFE busters are good to go.

Russell Gongora

“Our main product hydrogen peroxide with paretic acid. That is what we need to do mostly surface areas. That is bleach. It is environmental friendly. It is a very reliable substitute instead of using chlorine. We do not use chlorine. We all know chlorine is a hazardous chemical. We also know hydrogen peroxide to be a very powerful disinfectant. It has a one minute kill contact time. But it is an environmental friendly disinfectant. It is safe to the contact of humans, to animals and plants at the dilution that we used it.  What we do is try to contain and disinfect but also to prevent the cross contamination from one place to the other.  When we sanitize we sanitize using a motorize mist sprayer. Some people use thermostatic sprayers, some use blowers and what they should understand that any disinfectant is very important to know what is the kill contact time of that disinfectant. Because of accessibility I used the motorized mist sprayer because it applies firm applications of the disinfectant on the surface.  It wets, but it does not soak wet. And the kill contact is one minute kill contact time.”

And with that, this specific area of the city’s works department is sanitized and fumigated. All common areas are targeted.

Russell Gongora

“You mind is programmed that anywhere we go we treated as a hotspot, meaning each place is treated as a hotspot. We ask that the client be open and honest so that we know exactly what is the case in that scenario or that building where we are going to sanitize. We asked that they show us if it is a positive case where that persons is seated or that working area. What we do is a more terminal cleaning in that area because we have to sanitize everything especially in that area. But we still sanitize with a wet application with that disinfections.”

Before the process is completed, these SAFE busters then go through doffing and proper disposal of their P.P.E.s.

Russell Gongora

“There is nothing that we reuse. Everything that they have one has to be disposed in a red waste. Red waste is what we call a hazardous red waste bag so that everything that they take off when we enter a contaminated area is thrown in a bag and that bag is thrown in a red waste bag and then that is taken to the proper disposal of the red waste.”

And if you would like to sanitize your house and office on your own SAFE offers personalized tools do so. You can also use the solution to disinfect your groceries.

Amber Gongora, S.A.F.E.

“We have this promotion happening this week. It is a package, it is one liter spray and this is a gallon of the bio-sanitizer disinfectant. This bio-sanitizer disinfect can be used to disinfect surfaces, the floors, the walls, the ceiling, beneath your foot. People have been questioning us, can we disinfect our fruits? The answer is yes. This product was made for agriculture base. You can disinfect your fruits. You can disinfect your vegetables. You can use it for the groceries that come into your house.”
