Damage Assessment Underway in Stann Creek District

Tanya Nunez

This morning, a team from the National Emergency Management Organization attached to the Stann Creek office was deployed to the southern parts of district where a complete damage assessment was to be undertaken.  The purpose, according to Doctor Tanya Nunez, is for NEMO to be able to provide necessary support in rebuilding and repairing damaged structures across several communities.  The Emergency Operations Center in Dangriga was activated overnight and while shelter management was its primary mandate, information began trickling in early that losses had been suffered in at least four villages.

“We are currently getting reports from Hopkins, Sittee River, Sarawee and Silk Grass that there are a few houses where the roofs have flown off.  So the Damage Assessment team here at the Emergency Operations Center is getting ready to assess the damages themselves to see where we can provide support.”

“What was it like overnight in terms of discussing with those who are manning the various shelters the movement and activity in those locations?”

Dr. Tanya Nunez

“We had over nine hundred and eighty people in shelters throughout the district and from the reports that we’ve gotten, for the most part, people were comfortable.  They were waiting out the storm and anxious of course for it to be over so that they could get home safely.  So as soon as the all-clear was given, they scrambled to get out this morning. The team has to go out and assess the damages and there is definitely a process that needs to go through and where we might have missed any individuals we ask that they contact us through the NEMO numbers so that we can ensure to provide what they need.  We don’t want to miss anybody.”
