Minister of Transport Weighs In on COVID-19 and Public Buses

Edmond Castro

Minister Edmond Castro put on his other hat as Minister of Transport. He spoke on the issues of sanitization and crowding at bus terminals and on buses.

Edmond Castro, Minister of Transport

“We have passed the information that every bus operator must carry the disinfectant and sanitization mechanism for people to wash their hands; everyone must wear masks and they have the spray that every time they reached their destination they are supposed to spray the buses. I am hoping that they are doing this. We have the people at the transport department who should be looking out to ensure that this is being carried out.”

Andrea Polanco

“Are these officers at the terminal?”

Edmond Castro, Minister of Transport

“They are at the terminals because we can’t be at every stop on the highway.”

Reporter

“You understand imperative that we can’t the move around the COVID and what we saw at the bus station yesterday is ripe grounds for that?”

Edmond Castro

“Yes, it is true. I don’t know how best to manage that situation. If we try to manage that situation in a manner that we truly respect social distancing then no bus will be able to leave on time. It will probably take thirty minutes to load one bus and I don’t think not even the employees that need to get to work will have the adequate transportation to take them to work.”

Reporter

“What you are saying is that it is futile to try?”

Edmond Castro

“I am telling you if we ask the bus operator and demand of them to only put one person per seat because of social distancing then no bus operator will be able to run. It will be impossible for them to carry a forty-seater bus with ten persons.”
