Russell “Chiste” Garcia Sporting Complex is Quarantine Centre for COVID-19 Victims

Tania Nunez

There are several confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Dangriga so the Russell “Chiste” Garcia Sporting Complex is being used to facilitate patients.  Due to the protocols of the pandemic, social distancing has to be adhered to and so is the wearing of masks. Doctor Nunez told News Five that other facilities will be used as hurricane shelters.

Dr. Tania Nunez, NEMO’s Communications Officer, Stann Creek District

“At this time, there is a shelter in the Hopkins Village and it is the school. All plans have been made for that to be open if the need arises.”

“What’s the population of persons who supposed to be in a shelter considering COVID-19?”

Dr. Tania Nunez

“Well we have to take into consideration social distancing so depending on the size of the room that is what we are looking at, that is what’s guiding us. But generally we are looking at at least ten people. People who have underlying conditions or the elderly, we are asking shelter managers to place them in a separate room from the genral population.”

“Anything in regards to the Russell “Chiste” Garcia building?”

Dr. Tania Nunez

“That remains a quarantine centre so it is not to be used as a hurricane shelter.”

Reporter

“Do you have people there right now, quarantined?”

Dr. Tania Nunez

“We do have people there, yes, who are under quarantine. There is no mandatory evacuation at this time. We have not been given the directive from national headquarters for that to happen. So when we do get that directive, that is when we are going to activate our transportation system to move people from point A to point B.”
