OW NEMO Prepares for TS Nana

Kevin Bernard

As Tropical Storm Nana makes it way towards Belize, Belizeans across the country are preparing. While the exposed area is Belize City and southwards, NEMO has activate its district blanches. In Orange Walk shelters are opened for families who may be affected by flooding. Mayor Kevin Bernard sits on the NEMO Committee in Orange Walk and says that all preparations are being made for residents if the storm forces residents out of their homes.

Kevin Bernard, Mayor, Orange Walk Town

“Our role as the council is to always ensure that in the town, we are responsible for the town’s management, especially in flood prone areas, if there are need for people to evacuate that is where we will then support NEMO in assisting to get those people out should the need arise. Look at the trajectory as what it is, I don’t see we may have major issues but we do have some low lying areas and those are the people who are easily affected especially the ones by the river and the ones by Marcus Canul and the San Lorenzo Housing Site area. If there is need  we coordinate our activities with NEMO and then the council then takes on that responsibility to evacuate those individuals.”

“What about shelters? How many shelters are here, are accessible to citizens and are they prepared in the case they are need?”

Kevin Bernard

“From the information I have the report there were four shelters identified, two as COVID and two as normal shelters. Why that? I believe that San Pedro now being opened and if people need to evacuate from there, more likely they find the high grounds. The find Orange Walk or Belmopan and if there is any person that in town that also needs to be evacuated and may have had any issues with COVID and then those people are directed to that COVID shelter.”
