On Tuesday afternoon, twenty-two-year-old Joaquin Perez was killed on Royal Palm Street, a stone’s throw away from his house. Police in Orange Walk were called out to the Northern Regional Hospital where they learned that Perez had been fatally stabbed. Perez was stabbed a total of three times, to the face, neck and abdomen. According to Police, Perez was involved in a fight with two other young men.

“What the police know so far is that Perez seemingly was involved in a fight along with two other male persons on the said Royal Palm street and during that process, he was stabbed by one of those persons but he managed to make his way home where he was then transported to the northern regional hospital by family members.”

Perez died while receiving treatment. In speaking with CTV3 News in Orange Walk, Perez’s mother in law, Elda Derres Perez, says that the twenty-two-year old victim arrived home for lunch and then walked to the store to buy when the fight happened.

“I think the boy attacked him but he took his bike too, he had his machete too. So when he do like to chop the boy because he had to defend himself because he had a knife, he slipped and dropped. That is the time the boy stabbed him three times. One on his chest, one I think on his abdomen and one on his nose.”

Perez’s attackers fled. He was helped by a witness who carried him to his nearby house. Perez was bleeding profusely.

“She said that he was bleeding on his side a lot. I think some neighbor took him to the hospital but it was too late because he was bleeding a lot of blood. Reaching hospital he was pronounced dead.”

Perez’s family says they know who the killer is but are uncertain of the motive.

“We don’t have no idea who he is. My daughter says that she could not recognize him because he had a black mask and his hair was puff.”

“Did Joaquin manage to say anything what more or less, anything before he was taken to the hospital?”

Voice of: Elda Derras

“He couldn’t talk, he just watched his wife. That is all he did. He could not say anything because he was bleeding a lot. He had a lot of blood in his nose so he couldn’t talk.”

Reporter

“Do you believe that this was a random incident or the guy targeted him?”

Voice of: Elda Deras

“I think the guy targeted him because my daughter says he passed several times in front of his house and he only watched. And that he is the same man who did this, who stabbed Joaquin.”
