One Man Shot Dead, Another Critically Injured in Trench Town Ambush

Joshua Villas

Turning to crime….A man was callously murdered on Monday night inside his home in the Trenchtown area of San Ignacio.  Because of the curfew hours, Joshua Villas was at home with his family when he was executed in front of his common-law-wife and stepchildren. His wife says Joshua was called out and when he opened the front door, two men opened fire on him.  The deadly shooting happened in the blink of an eye. The gunmen next targeted Villas’ neighbour, Anthony Tzul.  Tzul was shot multiple times and while he survived the shooting, is in critical condition.  Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano with a report.

Cindy Canche, Spouse of Deceased

“For a kid to see a body lying there bleeding and thing, it’s a shock for them. It’s very hard.”

The traumatic experience of witnessing the taking of life will forever remain with a pair of children who saw firsthand the execution of a stepfather inside their home, here in the Trench Town community of San Ignacio.

“Like 9:15 or so, I hyah somebody come and dehn seh, “Bwai Jay, Jay, and he neva answer, but when dehn knock di door one time, he get up from di bed and I tell ahn weh you gwein?”  I tell ahn, “You noh seh da done curfew hours?”  And then he neva answer, so he just continue walk out from the room and he come and I hyah when he open di latch from the door and when I hyah, all I hyah he seh da, “Weh gaan ahn bwai?”

…and that’s when gunfire erupted.  Twenty-eight-year-old Joshua Villas had been blindsided and fired upon at close range.  As many as four shots were let loose in his direction.

“One behind the other dat da when I come out from my room and I mi di run out and when I mi di run out, I hyah more gunshots and I mi think dat dehn mi di shoot more towards di house, right.  So I just reverse back and I gaan down pan di ground and my kids dehn tell me, “Mom” and I tell dehn just hide under di bed.”

According to Cindy Canche, Villas’ common-law wife, it all happened within the blink of an eye.  So quickly did the shooting happen that she did not get a glimpse of her husband’s killer.

“When I hyah di gunshots mi over, I get up and I peep and when I peep di door mi slightly open and I just sih wahn shadow pass and I couldn’t recognize nobody or nothing.  So all I do da jump over my husband body and I pull di door and I lock it because I mih fraid mek dehn come back.”

Behind her was Villas’ motionless body.  Canche, in seeking assistance for him, called out to her tenant who lives in this wooden structure in front of the property.  Unbeknownst to her, the occupant’s common-law husband, Anthony Tzul, had also been shot multiple times during the deadly attack.

Cindy Canche

“I tell ahn, “Lex, call di police!”  I tell ahn and she di scream and she tell me oh cyant.  Ih seh dehn shot Tony too, and she staat to scream for help and help.  Then I sih wahn neighbor come out and I tell ahn please call di police.  So I lock my door again and I grab my phone and I call 911 and I tell dehn, dehn just kill my husband and dehn ask me where.  So I give them di direction and everything and that da when di police come.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett shares details of a preliminary investigation into the incident which corroborate Canche’s version of events.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“What happened is that there are two houses in the yard and Mr. Tzul, who is twenty-one-years-old, lives in the front wooden house, while the deceased, Mr. Villas, lives in the back house of the yard.  As a result, or what police know, is that two Hispanic males wearing masks and peak caps entered the location and then shouted for Mr. Villas and on their way out, they entered the home of Mr. Tzul where they fired several shots injuring him.  He is in a stable condition at the Western Regional Hospital.  At this time, we are following several leads in relation to this investigation.”

Could the sale of marijuana be the reason behind the deadly attack, considering similar past events relating to the illicit trade?

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Also during the police’s examination of the scene, a black plastic bag was found clutched in the deceased’s hand that had some lose cannabis.  And yes, he is known to the police as several searches have been done on his home.  I believe sometime around March of this year, he was charged for drug possession by the police.”
