State of Emergency Extended by 14 days

Osmany Salas

The state of public emergency was today extended for a further period of fourteen days.  Statutory instrument one hundred and ten was to expire on Thursday after it came into effect on August seventh. The government is satisfied that a public emergency persists given the COVID-19 outbreak across the country. Senator for N.G.O.s, Osmany Salas called on the public to act responsibly and follow the safety protocols.

Osmany Salas, Senator for N.G.O.s

“I think the last time I compared us to the region; we were at number four of the region. I don’t think we can ever surpassed Haiti. We are at number four and that is extremely bad. Up to the end of July and in reference to the tourism industry, we were still able to say that moving forward we could refer to Belize as a safe haven compared to other places. I regret to say that we are in such a bad state that we cannot make that claim anymore and this is what I hope Belizeans realize that the more we insist in not abiding by the safety protocols the greater the risk to the our nation. The harder things get, the longer it will take to get ourselves from this hole that COVID has carved out for our country. More than ever now we need to work a national unified effort, national unity more than ever. As I said before it is a pity that it is an election because there will be a mad race in trying to win and that is what political parties do and are expected to do. But we need to always keep in mind that these numbers are horrendous.”
